Our food system is broken
Our current food system is undermining the systems upon which food production relies. We are literally in the middle of a climate crisis and the sixth mass extinction of the planet. Food production is one of the biggest contributors at around a quarter of global carbon emissions and half of the world’s habitable land use.
The formal predictions are that there will be 9.7bn people alive in 2050. That’s less than 30 years away. The job in front of us is to ensure everybody gets fed, without overstepping our planetary boundaries. The reality is that we are already overstepping those boundaries (and not everybody is getting fed), so we have to change the system.
There’s no silver bullet, but there are a few key interventions, which we need to embrace and upscale. And fast.
